Language teaching
The pupils study English as their first foreign language (A 1) one hour per week in grades 1-2, and two hours per week in grades 3-6. In the 4th grade they can choose a voluntary language Swedish, German or French (A 2). There’s also a group for the Russian language (2 hours/week) for those who already command it when they start school. We also have sign language teaching every week.
Music classes
We have music classes ( grades 3-6) who study according to a curriculum with intensified music teaching. They continue their studies in Seinäjoen Lyseo (grades 7-9). Admission tests are held every spring for all the pupils in the 2nd grade and those who pass this musicality test well enough are accepted to the music class. Intensified music teaching is given 4 hours a week and there’s also one hour choir practice every week. The pupils in the music classes study music theory at school and in the spring term of the 4th grade they can pass a course examination (1/3) and in the spring term of the 6th grade (2/3) in the music academy of Southern Ostrobothnia. The academy provides the instrumental teaching. Musiikkiluokkien Tuki ry. was founded in 1981 to give financial support to the music classes.
Start class
The first start class in Seinäjoki started in 1989 and the next one in 1997. First-form pupils who may have difficulties in starting school in a big group, are placed in the start class. They follow the mainstream curriculum and after the 2nd grade; at the latest, they will go either to a mainstream class or a special teaching class. The maximum number of pupils in a start class is 10.
